The Glendive School District is moving forward with purchasing housing to be made available for teachers.
The school board recently collected bids from three area manufactured/modular home dealers as well as explored the purchase of stick-built duplexes.
After discussing the pros and cons of each option and each bid, the Building/Budget Committee narrowed their recommendation down to one -— Centennial Homes.
Each home will be two bedrooms and two baths. Three homes will be purchased at a cost of $55,230 each. The homes will be placed on the Cenntennial-owned lots in West Glendive.
The three homes are able to be purchased largely due to grants from the Oil and Gas Impact Fund from the Montana Office of Public Instruction. The Glendive School District received two grants totalling $75,000 each.
The remainder of the purchase price will come from another source.
Though a monthly rental amount has not yet been determined, that amount will be inclusive of the monthly lot rent of $250 plus a reasonable amount to pay for home rental.
The homes will be in place and available by mid-August.
The goal is to provide teachers with affordable housing for up to three years. The assumption being that, at the end of those three years, teachers will have had time and opportunity to save money to find housing of their own.
The school housing will be offered only to school employees.
If two teachers desired, they could shared a home and split the rent, according to discussion.
Sadorf stated that is what other district schools are doing with their rental housing.
Some school districts with housing are renting properties to non-school employees.
Farber stated that he is sure that will not be the case in Glendive, “at least not for the forseeable future,” he added.
With no further discussion, the board completed a first reading of the housing proposal. The draft was approved as was the recommendation to purchase the three homes from Centennial Homes.
In other business, Dawson County High School Principal Wade Murphy said he is interviewing a candidate for math teacher which would have brought him to 100 percent staff for the high school.
“Unfortunately, we just received a resignation letter from (family and consumer science teacher) Sara Whitmayer,” Murphy said, which will mean recruiting for one more teaching position.
The board also heard a recommendation to offer the position of assistant principal position to Stephan Schreibeis, a Glendive native.
He shared that Schreibeis graduated from Dawson County High school and that he was looking forward to working with him.
The board approved offering Schreibeis the position.
